Syzygy Sailing

Bought a boat, fixed a boat, sailed to Australia, sold the boat.

Track our departure in real-time!

Pete and I believe that we fixed the engine, and Pete replaced the capacitor and rebuilt the fried portion of the ssb circuit board (our long-range radio), so barring other obstacles, we will be heading over to the fuel dock in an hour, and then departing.

As we leave, you should be able to watch us sail out of the bay in real-time on this website.  Stations on shore pick up our AIS signal (while we’re in range) and track us.  I added a link to the sidebar that will take you to our AIS signal (if there is one at the moment that is).  Whenever we are within range of one of these stations on the coast, you’ll be able to see exactly where we are, what direction we’re headed, and how fast (or slow!) we’re getting there.

Disclaimer: I don’t know how many other stations there are down the coast, or how often we’ll be in range, so don’t worry about us if we rarely show up on the tracking site.  Mainly, I don’t want family and friends fretting about us on account of this AIS thing.  The AIS takes power to operate, too, so we may power it up only occasionally.  But see if you can catch a glimpse of us leaving the bay at the least!

Matt and Karen… so happy for you. All the work, all the pain and heartache, it’s about to be worth it. You’ve endured so much for this moment. This day is truly yours. I’m pretty choked up watching the AIS as you head through the bay, taking in the enormity of the last four years and what it means for our boat to finally be leaving. Wish I could be there sailing away with you, but I’ll be there in just a few months. Be safe. Enjoy every moment. Take many, many pictures. Kings to you.

    CONGRATULATIONS !!!

I know for all of you (especially my son Jon), this has been a long and arduous adventure just getting to this point. Jon reminded last week me that it was about 4 years ago when the vision of this around-the-world sailing journey first materialized to you folks. As they say, “The best way to predict the future is to create it” and all of you have created this future with wonderful pride and purpose.

Many experiences have occurred in your lives to enable you to release that last mooring line and begin your journey today. Friends have come and friends have gone. Love has arrived and love has escaped. Through it all, you have persevered to overcome many challenges to arrive at this notable day. Those of us on the sidelines have apprehensively watched all the ups and downs to see if this day would ever happen, knowing full well you would eventually succeed.

“You can only go as far as you can see, but when you get there, you will always be able to see farther”….and so it is today. Four years ago you saw this day and now that you have arrived you can see even farther as your travels unfold. We look forward to watching and reading your future history.

May God be with you and carry you safe in his arms as your journey continues into the waves of adventure.
